The weekend of October 24 and 25 will be an important one for The Midland Theatre. A life-size sculpture of Mark Twain will be given to The Midland Theatre, compliments of local philanthropist J. Gilbert Reese. The Gary Price sculpture will be unveiled at a ceremony Friday evening October 24th.

The sculpture is being placed as a tribute to Hal Holbrook, whose portrayal of Mark Twain has deep local roots. Holbrook began his research and portrayal of the Twain character as a student at Denison University. His first white linen suit was a gift from Reese’s father. Holbrook’s wife Dixie Carter will be on hand for the unveiling. Holbrook is performing Mark Twain Tonight in Spokane Washington on October 25 and will be unable to attend.

“This weekend will provide, not only a memorable concert by Miss Carter, but a visible reminder of Hal Holbrook’s artistry in keeping Mark Twain alive throughout his career. Through the Reese’s generosity, this sculpture will let future generations know of the special connection among Mr. Holbrook, the Reese family, Denison University, The Midland, and this entire area.”

Dixie Carter will be performing her critically acclaimed cabaret at The Midland Theatre on Saturday evening at 8:00 pm. In her own words, Carter describes the show by saying, “I begin with the classics, the Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kerns songs that are the core of cabaret. The show has been described as ‘eclectic’ and ‘iconoclastic’ by The New York Times, because of second act pieces by Bruce Springsteen, Lyle Lovett, and my favorite, Bob Dylan.

Comedy songs by John Wallowitch, “I’m 27,” “Cosmetic Surgery” and “Cheap Decadent Drivel” (about current pop music) are great fun for the audience and for me. There is usually a story or two about my childhood in west Tennessee.”

Tickets for the performance Saturday are available at The Midland Theatre box office, open 9:00 am until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling 345-LIVE! (5483). The Midland accepts Master Card, Visa and cash.
