A Denison University student was caught in the crossfire of two groups and was shot and killed by a stray bullet in 1982.

Now, one of those men held responsible for the murder of Laura Carter wants another day in court.

Gordon Newlin was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and news partner 10TV Eyewitness news spoke to his attorney Max Kravitz

"He didn't get a fair trial, simply stated. We're looking forward to obtaining Mr. Newlin a new trial."

Kravitz says the way the prosecution led testimony from a witness, steered the jury in the wrong direction.

"A witness who refused to answer questions, was asked 157 narrative questions, which Mr. Canady refused to answer. And the jury was left with the impression that the questions might have been the truth."

Pop singer Christopher Cross was dating Laura's college roommate at the time of the murder and wrote a song in honor of Carter.

The song "Think of Laura" peaked at number 9 on the charts in 1984.
