A Utah charity accused of ripping off public schools across the country on sales of fitness equipment is filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
The National School Fitness Foundation sold more than $77 Million dollars in fitness equipment to more than 600 schools across 20 states, including 2 in Licking County and Muskingum Counties and 4 districts in Fairfield County.
Newark City Schools paid $62,000 of the $150,000 contract. Superintendent Keith Richards says that they knew there was a risk involved in the program Richards adds that even though the entire contract wasn't honored, it was still a good deal.
Licking Valley Treasurer Jo Lynn Torbert says the foundation paid $102,000 of their contract with no problems.
West Muskingum , Maysville, Bloom-Carroll, Liberty Union, Pickerington and Canal Winchester school districts also took part in the program.
Then foundation made it's bankruptcy filing the same day a federal court in Minnesota ordered it to stop doing business in the state.
The judge also froze nearly $7-million dollars of the charity's assests.
So far, no criminal charges have been filed.
