There is a lot going on in the city of Heath.
“With summer approaching, we have several things going on. We are getting ready for the opening of the Heath Pool, which is May 31st. Grass has started growing, so we are really busy with that. Also, people are starting to fill up the parks on a regular basis.”
The Heath Water Park attracts thousands of visitors every year, and Recreation Director Chris Lawson says they have undertaken a few big projects there.
“We are installing new flooring at the entrance to the pool, which will be an all-weather aggregate to replace the existing carpet that we have had there for several years. We are also replacing the skylight that is just above that, and we are installing a new sound system at the pool.”
Lawson talks about some of the activities offered at the water park.
“We do receive a lot of phone calls about our swim lessons, which we do offer for $15 at the Heath Water Park. We are having two sessions this year. The first session will be June 9th through June 20th, and the second session will be July 7th through July 18th. You can call 522-4049 to enroll in those swimming lessons. Starting in June, we will have a series of Sunset Swims. Those dates are June 14th, June 28th, July 12th, July 26th and August 9th. On those days, the Heath Water Park will remain open until 9 p.m. during the months of June and August, and 10 p.m. in July. We also have water exercise programs, which are adult lap swim times. We are always looking to increase our activities. For more information about any of the activities at the pool, you can always call 522-4049.”
Lawson says the city also features a Recreation Center for residents to enjoy.
“We do have a Recreation Center in the city of Heath at 771 Irvingwick Drive, which is the location of the old Newark Air Force Base. Right now, we are currently running a three-month member promotion, where we are taking $10 off the general membership price. We have our Personal Training Studio, which offers women-only group classes and senior-only group classes. We also have free tanning as a member privilege. For more information about all of the programs offered at the Recreation Center, call 788-9340.”
Lawson adds that if outdoors is more your style, you can take advantage of the city’s bike trail.
“We have River Front Walkway, and that is located at Hoback Park. You can actually take the walkway all the way to the Heath Pool, so that is a nice activity for people to enjoy.”
Lawson says in July, the city will dazzle the crowd with its fantastic fireworks display at its annual Star Spangled Celebration.
“That will be Wednesday, July 2nd. We will also be having Kids First Fest, which is also at Geller Park on September 14th. That is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.”
