OHIO STATE SCORES AND STORIES:

MENS BASKETBALL-

Evan Turner didn't need any late-game heroics on Sunday.

When it appeared there was nothing more he could do to make his Big Ten tournament performance better, the junior had 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 5 Ohio State over Minnesota 90-61 on Sunday in the championship game.

Turner hit a 37-foot shot at the buzzer to beat Michigan in the quarterfinals, then scored 12 of his 31 points after regulation in a double-overtime win over Illinois in the semifinals. On Sunday, he set the tournament record for points in a championship game.

Lawrence Westbrook scored 17 points for Minnesota (21-13), which had beaten Purdue by 27 on Saturday.

NCAA TOURNAMENT-OHIO ST

Hours after easily winning the Big Ten tournament title on Sunday, the Ohio State Buckeyes received a No. 2 seed and a trip to Milwaukee to play UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA tournament on Friday. Ohio State (27-7), winners of 15 of 17 while taking a share of the Big Ten's regular-season title, will be making its 22nd trip to the big tournament. Three years ago coach Thad Matta's team lost in the championship game to Florida.

The 15th-seeded Gauchos (20-9) won a share of the Big West regular-season title and won the conference's automatic berth by winning the tournament. Ohio State, on a seven-game winning streak, beat Minnesota 90-61 in the Big Ten finale earlier on Sunday behind tournament MVP and conference player of the year Evan Turner.

WOMENS BASKETBALL-

Ohio State, coming off its sixth consecutive Big Ten title, drew a No. 2 seed and will play 15th-seeded St. Francis, Pa., on Sunday in the opening round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

St. Francis (17-14), champions of the Northeast Conference, will take on the Buckeyes at 12:06 p.m. Sunday. The Buckeyes (30-4) are led by the 1-2 punch of three-time Big Ten player of the year Jantel Lavender inside and elusive point guard Samantha Prahalis running the break.

Ohio State is making its 19th trip to the NCAA tournament where the Buckeyes are 20-18. A year ago, in their seventh consecutive year in the tournament under coach Jim Foster, they won their first two NCAA games before losing to Stanford in the regional semifinals.

CAVALIERS

Pacers vs Cavaliers

James takes over late for Cavs...

Lebron James had 32 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched their 2nd straight outright Central Division Championship and 3rd in team history, beating Indiana 99-94 on Wednesday night.

Cleveland 54-15 is the 1st team this season to clinch its Division.

After Cleveland’s 18 point lead was cut to one, James had six points, 2 blocks, 2 steals and an assist in the final 4 minutes, including a nifty dunk behind his head after catching an alley-oop pass from Anderson Varejao. James fell a rebound and an assist shy of his 2nd triple-double in 2 nights.

Troy Murphy had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Roy Hibbert had 20 points for the Pacers, who were without leading scorer Danny Granger.

BLUE JACKETS:

Antoine Vermette had two assists and scored the clinching empty-netter Monday night to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past Edmonton 5-3, adding to the Oilers' road woes.

Kristian Huselius added a goal and three assists and Jake Voracek, Chris Clark and Marc Methot also scored for the Blue Jackets, who totaled only three goals in their previous two games. Derek Dorsett chipped in with two assists for the first multipoint game of his 91-game career.

It was a wild, wide-open game full of odd-man rushes. That wasn't a surprise, since the two teams rank near the bottom of the NHL in goals allowed.

Robert Nilsson and Aaron Johnson each had a goal and an assist and Dustin Penner also scored for the Oilers, who are just 1-14-1 on the road since mid-December.

INDIANS:

Brewers vs Reds

Chapman strike out 5 but Brewers beat Reds 5-2.

Cuban Defector Aroldis Chapman struck out 5 during his latest impressive showing Wednesday, but a Cincinnati Reds split squad couldn’t manage much against Doug Davis in a 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 22 year old Chapman, making his case for a spot in the Reds rotation, allowed only one hit in 3 innings, a solo homer by Rickie weeks. The left-hander has given up only one run during 7 innings this spring and is one of several candidates for the 5th starter’s spot.

Davis started for Milwaukee and allowed 3 hits and a walk in 4 scoreless innings.

The Brewers scored 4 runs off Kip Wells. Craig Counsel had a two- run double and Adam Stern hit a two- run homer.

Indians vs Rockies

De La Rosa strikes out 6 as Rockies beat Indians

Jorge De La Rosa turned in his longest outing of this spring, throwing 5 innings and striking out six in the Colorado Rockies 6-3 win over a Cleveland Indians split squad Wednesday.

De La Rosa only got stronger as the game went along, striking out the side in the 5th. For his increased endurance, the hard-throwing lefty credits a revamped offseason conditioning program that helped him shed 18 pounds.

REDS:

Aroldis Chapman struck out two over two scoreless innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Friday. Chapman allowed just two infield singles. His strikeouts came on the last two batters he faced, overpowering Matt Kemp on a high fastball and getting Casey Blake looking.

Chapman defected from Cuba last year and agreed to a $30.25 million, six-year contract with the Reds in January. The left-hander has allowed three hits over four scoreless innings in two spring outings.

Bronson Arroyo started for Cincinnati and pitched three scoreless innings.

Angelo Songco and Christian Lara each drove in a run in the ninth for Los Angeles.

BROWNS:

QUINN TRADE

The Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos for fullback Peyton Hillis and a 2011 draft pick. The teams announced the trade Sunday and said the deal is pending physicals. Quinn's departure comes one day after the Browns agreed to terms with free agent Jake Delhomme on a two-year contract.

BROWNS-RAIDERS TRADE

The Oakland Raiders have acquired outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley from the Cleveland Browns for undisclosed draft picks. The Raiders announced the trade Sunday. Wimbley was dealt within hours of Cleveland's trade of quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos. Wimbley was drafted in the first round out of Florida State in 2006. He had 11 sacks as a rookie, but had 15½ more over the next three seasons.

Free agent quarterback Jake Delhomme has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. The QB's agent, Rick Smith confirmed Delhomme's agreement with the Browns, who have been busy trying to fix a troublesome position.

BENGALS:

Safety Roy Williams agreed to a one-year deal to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals. Williams signed with the Bengals as a free agent from Dallas last year and was the starting strong safety when the season began.

He suffered a forearm injury in the third game of the season and never fully healed, limiting him to one more game. He went on injured reserve Nov. 13 and became a free agent after the season.

The Bengals' medical staff has cleared Williams to fully participate in offseason conditioning. He was a five-time Pro Bowl player with Dallas before leaving for Cincinnati.

OHIO COLLEGE SCORES:

NCAA TOURNAMENT-XAVIER

Xavier got a No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first-round game against a team it hasn't faced since the 1950s. The four-time Atlantic 10 regular-season champs will play Minnesota on Friday in Milwaukee, part of the West Region. Minnesota lost to Ohio State 90-61 on Sunday in the Big Ten title game. The teams played three times in the 1950s, with Minnesota winning them all.

Xavier reached the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight year and the ninth time in 10 years. If the Musketeers beat Minnesota, they could play a second-round game against Pittsburgh, the team that knocked them out in the regional semifinals last year.

NCAA TOURNAMENT-OHIO

NCAA Ohio State

Buckeyes loose and ready for NCAA Opener

The 5th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes appear to be anything but uptight and nervous as they prepare for their NCAA tournament opener on Friday night against UC Santa Barbara in Milwaukee.

2nd-seeded Ohio State (27-7) has won 15 of its last 17 games, including the last 7, following up a share of the Big Ten Title by winning the Conference Tournament.

NIT

Tulsa vs Kent St.
Sherman’s layup leads Kent State past Tulsa in NIT

Rodriguez Shermans driving layup with 20.8 seconds remaining led Kent State to a come-from-behind 75-74 victory over Tulsa on Wednesday night in a 1st round game of the National Invitational Tournament.

Weber St vs Cincinnati
Cincinnati beats Weber State 76-62 in NIT

Deonta Vaughn scored 16 points, and Cincinnati’s trapping defense set up a 17-0 run that swept the Bearcats to a 76-62 victory over Weber State in the 1st round of the NIT on Wednesday night.

Cincinnati (19-15), playing in the tournament for the 1st time since 2006, will host Dayton in the 2nd round.

The Bearcats turned to a half-court trap that unnerved Weber State (20-11). The Wildcats had seven turnovers during the decisive 17-0 run in the 1st half and finished with a season-high 23.

Illinois State vs Dayton

Dayton uses Big 2nd half run, tops Illinois St.

Chris Johnson scored 13 points and Dayton used a 19-1 2nd half run to pull away and beat Illinois State 63-42 in the openings round of the nit on Wednesday night.

Chris wright grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Dayton 21-12 to a 42-27 advantage on the boards. The flyers will play at Cincinnati on Wednesday in the 2nd round.
