OHIO STATE SCORES AND STORIES:

MENS BASKETBALL-

Ohio State guard Evan Turner has been named the Big Ten's player of the year in separate voting by conference coaches and members of the media. Turner was tops in conference scoring, averaging 20.1 points per Big Ten game. He also averaged 8.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 5.9 assists.

He was joined Monday on both the coaches' and media first teams by fellow juniors Demetri McCamey of Illinois, Kalin Lucas of Michigan State and two players from Purdue, Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore.

The Boilermakers' Chris Kramer was named the Big Ten defensive player of the year by the coaches, his second win. Illinois' D.J. Richardson was named freshman of the year by the coaches while Northwestern's Drew Crawford was chosen by the media.

Big Ten coaches chose Purdue's Matt Painter as the coach of the year while the media gave the honor to Ohio State's Thad Matta.

WOMENS BASKETBALL-

Jantel Lavender made two free throws with 1.9 seconds left Sunday, giving No. 10 Ohio State a 66-64 victory over third-seeded Iowa in the Big Ten title game. It was a huge day for Lavender, who led the Buckeyes back from a 16-point second-half deficit. She finished with 35 points and 10 rebounds and made the decisive free throws in the final seconds of the title game for the second straight year.

She also joined the 2,000-point club and had her 100th consecutive double-figure scoring day. Ohio State (30-4) tied the school record for victories by winning its second straight tourney title and an automatic bid to the NCAA

Iowa (19-13) was led by Kamille Wahlin with 20 points and Kelly Krei with 18 points. The Hawkeyes had a chance to win it after Lavender's free throws, but Wahlin's shot from near half-court missed the rim.

CAVALIERS

An MRI taken on Cavaliers forward Antawn Jamison's left knee has shown no serious problems. Jamison was forced to leave Monday night's game against the San Antonio Spurs in the third quarter with tightness in the back of his knee. He underwent a follow-up exam and MRI, which a team spokesman said was "good."

Jamison, who has had soreness in his knee most of this season, will continue daily treatments. He scored 17 points before leaving Monday's win. Jamison plans to play on Friday when the Cavs visit Philadelphia.

BLUE JACKETS:

Jakub Voracek scored during Columbus' first power play and set up another second-period goal by Fedor Tyutin to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night. Mathieu Garon made 36 saves one night after relieving Steve Mason, who gave up four goals on 12 shots against Los Angeles in the first period of a 6-0 loss.

Derek Dorsett scored his fourth goal of an injury-plagued season and the Blue Jackets got power-play goals from Antoine Vermette and Derick Brassard in the final 1:58. Columbus bounced back from Monday's effort in which they recorded only 11 shots.

Columbus snapped a five-game losing streak despite the absence of leading scorer Rick Nash (lower body), who was scratched for the first time this season.

INDIANS:

Jason Vargas pitched into the fourth inning in another impressive outing but the Seattle Mariners lost 6-4 to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday. Vargas, one of four candidates for Seattle's fifth starter spot, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one in 3 2-3 scoreless innings. The 27-year-old left-hander threw 49 pitches while becoming the first Mariners pitcher to get into the fourth.

Vargas has allowed three hits in 5 2-3 shutout innings this spring.

Aaron Laffey pitched two scoreless innings for Cleveland, and Wes Hodges had a pair of two-run doubles. Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-out, two-run triple in the fourth for Seattle.

REDS:

Justin Upton hit a two-run homer, and the Arizona Diamondbacks roughed up right-hander Aaron Harang in his first spring training start on Tuesday, pulling away to a 10-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Upton got a six-year, $51.25 million deal — the second-largest in franchise history — last week. He singled home a run and had a two-run shot off Matt Maloney, who is competing for the Reds' fifth starter role.

Harang, already named to start his fifth straight season opener, lasted only 1 1-3 innings. He gave up four hits, including three doubles, and walked one, allowing three runs overall. Harang is trying to shorten his delivery during spring training.

BROWNS:

The Cleveland Browns have released quarterback Derek Anderson.

Anderson made the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he threw 29 touchdown passes and led the club to a 10-6 record. But his career has been in a tailspin ever since. He lost his starting job to Brady Quinn last season, got it back when Quinn was injured but played poorly.

Anderson's release comes one day after the Browns acquired backup Seneca Wallace in a trade from Seattle. The 26-year-old Anderson spent five seasons with Cleveland. He was due a $2 million roster bonus March 19. Browns coach Eric Mangini said in a statement that Anderson did "everything we asked of him and it was a pleasure to coach such a competitive person."

OHIO COLLEGE SCORES:

BIG EAST-RUTGERS-CINCINNATI

Lance Stephenson celebrated being selected Big East Rookie of the Year by making the deciding free throw with 1.8 seconds to play, leading Cincinnati to a 69-68 opening-round victory over Rutgers on Tuesday night.

Stephenson had 13 points — 10 in a 4-minute span of the second half — nine rebounds and five assists to lead the 11th-seeded Bearcats (17-14) to their first ever victory in the Big East tournament and a second-round matchup against sixth-seeded Louisville on Wednesday.

T25-HRZ-WRIGHT ST-BUTLER

Shelvin Mack scored all 14 of his points in the first half, and Matt Howard had 14 points and nine rebounds to help No. 12 Butler rout second-seeded Wright State 70-45 in the Horizon League title game Tuesday night.

Butler (28-4) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 20 and heads into NCAA play as the only Division I team to complete a perfect conference season.

T25-A10-XAVIER

No. 24 Xavier was still celebrating its share of a fourth straight regular-season title in the Atlantic 10 when coach Chris Mack raised a nagging subject. For all its regular-season success, Xavier hasn't fared very well in the conference tournament lately.

Xavier (23-7, 14-2) hasn't won more than one game in the A-10 tournament during the last three seasons. Mack and the Musketeers are looking for a breakthrough in Atlantic City, N.J., this week. They'll play Dayton or George Washington on Friday in the quarterfinals.

T25-TEMPLE-XAVIER

Perfect in the regular season. Perfect in the tournament, albeit with an overtime in the championship game. Xavier is the champion of the Atlantic 10.

Xavier scored the game's first 14 points, blew the lead in the second half and survived the extra period Monday in a 57-55 win over Temple, claiming the No. 5 Musketeers' third conference title in four years and an automatic NCAA bid.

A10-GEORGE WASHINGTON-DAYTON

Marcus Johnson scored 16 points and Dayton used a late nine-point run to defeat George Washington 70-60 Tuesday night in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.

Dayton (20-11) led 44-33 in the second half, but the Colonials (16-14) chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 55 on Damian Hollis' jumper with 5:58 left. The Flyers responded by going 8-for-10 from the line, fueling a 15-5 run that included the 9-0 run to close the game. Kurt Huelsman was 6-for-8 at the line in the final 7 minutes.
